On 2 June 1946, Italy held a referendum to choose between remaining a ConstitutionalMonarchy or becoming a Republic. They selected the republic. That date is commemorated as FestaDellaRepubblica and is Italy’s National Day.

The 1946 referendum was also the first time women voted in a political election. UniversalSuffrage. GenderEquality.
